Nims Dai-A mountaineer aka Nirmal Purja is a Nepal-born naturalized British mountaineer and a holder of multiple mountaineering world records. He was born on 25th July 1983 in Myagdi, Gandaki Province. As Nirmal Purja is regarded as one of the world’s very best mountaineers, much of Nirmal’s life was spent in the military, initially as a member of the brigade of Gurkhas. In a record time of six months and six days with the aid of bottled oxygen, Purja is notable for having climbed all 14 eight-thousands.
Military Career
In 2003, Nirmal Purja joined Brigade of Gurkhas and was accepted into the Royal Navy’s Special Boat service in 2009. He was the first Gurkha to join the elite British unit. Purja served as cold–a weather warfare specialist in the Special Boat Service. He also said that he was involved in all theatres of war where Britain was involved in. He was wounded after a sniper bullet that missed his neck by striking the butt of the stock of his rifle.
Mountaineering Career
After 6 years he served as a cold weather warfare specialist and also he became the first Gurkha ever to join Britain’s Special Boat Service.
During his time in the SBS, he developed an interest in mountaineering. His major climb was in 2012, reaching the summit of Lobuche East. While he has no previous experience.
To focus on his mountaineering career, Nirmal chose to leave the military in 2018. He was awarded an MBE for his outstanding work in high-altitude mountaineering in the same year.
Along with nine other Nepali mountaineers, Nirmal Purja made history on 16 January 2021 as the ascend K2 in the difficult weather conditions of the winter. Purja was the only team member to the summit without the use of supplemental oxygen and became the first person to do so in winter. After terrible weather conditions hit the lower camps at the foot of K2 also some equipment was lost during that period. Nepali mountaineers of these three teams decided to join their efforts and climbed the peak together as a single team.
In May 2022 he set another speed record for climbing Kangchenjunga, Mount Everest and Lhotse sequentially without oxygen, with a period of 8 days 23 hours and 10 minutes. He climbed Kangchenjunga culmination on May 7 at 10:50 am. He arrived at the highest point of Mount Everest on May 15 at 8 am. It was his 6th rising to the culmination of Mount Everest. Following 26 hours, on May 16, at 10 am, he arrived at the highest point of Lhotse.
